There are sporting events around the world that need no further explanation other than their name. In golf we have the Masters and the Open; there’s Wimbledon, the Tour de France, a Lords Test or the Superbowl. Elite sport at its best held at the most iconic venues.

Last week I took part in my second such event without even being the best competitor among my close friends. And that’s just one of the reasons I love running!

Two weeks ago I added the New York Marathon to my previous London Marathon finish. The world’s greatest athletic event. Over 50,000 runners taking to the streets of New York’s 5 boroughs. From the best in the world to a slightly overweight 41 year old ex-smoker from Stoke, every one of the 26.2 miles the winners covered, I covered. (I actually did 27 miles as I zig zagged to get good photos)

NYC Marathon

It was an incredible experience, as London before it had been. As I said, I love running. I’ll never win a race but the rhythm of one foot in front of another over long distances just gets me to my happy place. And to do it in the company of so many like-minded people (and my brother in law) makes it something special. Throw in the back drop of a crisp sunny day and a journey from Staten Island through Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Manhattan, all finishing up in Central Park and you’ve got the most wonderful (and slow) sightseeing trip in the world.

The roads are wide and the crowds are thick, so it’s not a race for PB’s, so with the pressure of going for a time removed and an amazing crowd to cheer me on, I just plodded on and enjoyed the most incredible day.

I’d recommend a marathon to anyone. Anyone can do it, it really is just one foot in front of the other and the emotional and physical reward is (IMHO) unsurpassed. I’m lucky to have got a ballot place in two of the greatest sporting events on earth but even if you have an inkling that it would be rewarding to give it a go, just get a plan off the internet or give me a call and I’ll share one! Put one foot in front of the other and I guarantee that you’ll never get a better return for your efforts. I’m into double figures now and can’t see me stopping until I have to! (I’ve got 4 more majors to bag for a start!)
