Europe’s best twelve men, women and seniors line up at the free to enter American Golf U.K. Long Drive Championship on 2nd August

Europe’s biggest hitting golfers, the explosive thoroughbreds of the game, will be aiming to drive the length of Chester racecourse on Thursday 2nd August when the American Golf U.K. Long Drive Championship hits the city centre venue.

With six competitors qualifying with distances of over 400 yards, records are set to tumble as American Golf and tournament sponsor Callaway invite the long drive specialists to hit balls down the specially designed grid. Over the course of the day, 12 competitors will battle it out for the U.K. title in each of the Under 45, Over 45 and Ladies categories. The semi-finalists in each category will line up from 5pm with the final balls deciding the national champions being hit between 6 and 7.15pm.

Entry to the event is completely free of charge, with food and drink available to buy on site and a carnival atmosphere led by a DJ playing the soundtrack to the long drive action. Long drive is a fast growing spin off from the traditional game and in this fourth year the American Golf U.K. championship has attracted the very best from all over Europe as Matt Bacon, Head of Events at American Golf explains, “Although we’ve seen golfers from all over the world fly in to take part, this competition is all about the huge numbers of loyal American Golf customers who come back year after year to compete. Having Callaway as sponsor has been a huge draw this year and now we’ve narrowed down the talent to the final 12 in each category, we know we have raised the bar for the competition. I can’t wait to get all of the qualifiers to Chester racecourse. This is now without a doubt Europe’s most prestigious long drive title and the action will be explosive!”

2017 Champion Dan Konyk will be returning to defend his title, after securing victory last year with a drive of 430 yards. He said, “It was great to regain my U.K. title last year despite not having the best preparation. It’s been much the same this time round for the 2018 American Golf Championship but I’m still aiming to put in a winning performance. This is my last year in Long Drive as I want to concentrate on my professional golf career so to have the chance to hit at a venue like Chester racecourse is amazing and I’m looking forward to going out on a high with the U.K. title and qualification for a last chance at the Worlds.”

The 2018 Under 45, Over 45 and Ladies finals will be shown on Sky Sports, with the winners gaining qualification for the world championships. The Long Drive Championship is one part of American Golf’s drive to get more people hitting more balls and for 2018 those balls have been going a very long way!
